Virgin Update, Revolutions and Ratings

Monday, November 24th, 2003

Just to mention that I’ve not had any update from Virgin. The situation definately appears to be related to the line; don’t know if they have any bandwidth limits that I’ve exceeded or what. Their “we will try to get back to you within 24 hours but we’re very busy” line isn’t helpful…

Also, saw Matrix Revolutions which was a disappointment. An enjoyable mindless mess of a movie but what is really annoying is the feeling of a missed opportunity. Lots of questions still remain unanswered, which can sometimes be satsifying - but not if the creators appear to be changing the rules as they go along…

I’ve added it’s (rather poor) rating to my ratings & reviews page, along with a few other films and books that I’ve read recently. As an alternative, I recommend Sexy Beast if only for the performance by Ben Kingsley…

Excerpts from Expert Judgement on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Again from NTK: this is the inspiration for a T-shirt - not the most promising of starts, but it really is a fascinating article.

The focus of the article is about how to protect a dangerous radioactive site. This has to be done in such a way as to communicate unambiguously about how deadly the risk is, while understanding that language and other elements of civilisation may have changed beyond our recognition.

Bloody Virgin

Thursday, November 20th, 2003

I have Virgin ADSL at my new home. It used to be pretty rubbish, for some reason - attempts to connect to websites would hang, getting 4kb/s was pretty good going, etc.

They “upgraded” the back-end infrastructure to cope with the additional demand. Since then, I’ve had few problems with the downloading - getting quite good rates, for the most part.

However, uploading documents to anywhere (any FTP site, my web site, sending emails) is basically broken - it no longer works at all. I have no idea why.

Giving Virgin one final chance, I decided to submit a request to their customer services via the form on their webpage. After you’ve filled in the details, it returns this message:

[Incidentally, I will post more photos just as soon as I find my mini camera! I have also got myself a big camera which takes pretty amazing photos (as long as I don't screw up the composition, etc) so I may be posting some of those...]

Deer in Richmond Park

Saturday, November 8th, 2003

Richmond Park is by far the best park in London. It’s a nearly wild area, with grazing deer, forests, herons and some magnificent scenery. I managed to get close enough to one deer to take this, which I’m quite pleased with given the wide-angle lens on my little camera!
