The main thing I like about the City of London is the bizarre combination of ancient churches with brand-new shiny buildings. If I remember rightly, this church originates from 1733 (or something), which is only a couple of hundred years older than the building behind it…
These “street paintings” by Kurt Wenner are a fairly impressive example of what’s possible with some home-made pastels and a lot of time and skill. Note that all of these are on flat pavement!

The National History Museum is an amazing building – not only does it have a distinctive striped facade but there are hundreds of tiny sculptures built into the walls of everything from monkeys to jellyfish.

There’s a rather funky wire-mesh sculpture of an elephant at the top of the escalators going down to the Jubilee line in Waterloo station. I don’t know why…
