Firefox and RSS

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Everybody should be using Firefox, rather than other dodgy browsers.

Why? Well, there’s a couple of decent reasons:

  • Better security – gets rid of popups and avoids spyware
  • Faster – a lean browsing experience
  • Standards Compliant – because these things really do matter

Apart from all of that is the good support for RSS: this is a mechanism for keeping up to date with web pages that update their content regularly. It’s easy for RSS software to determine if there’s any new exciting content for you to browse, and you can easily glance through what’s available to see if it interests you.

In the case of Firefox there is a built-in RSS tool – simply click on the icon in the bottom-right of the window and select the “Add RSS feed” option, and you’ll get a special bookmark folder that contains links to all the new articles.

Alternatively, you can get a Firefox extension called “Sage” which allows you to collect lots of RSS feeds and check all of them to see what’s got new stuff to look at.

As a final bonus you’ll find that this page itself has an RSS feed so you’ll never have to come here only to be disappointed – you can just check to see if there’s anything new!

Anniversary

Monday, August 2nd, 2004

This weblog is now just over a year old, contains 130 entries (of which 76 have photos – not very good for a “photo weblog” but there you go!) and I’m still enjoying creating stuff for it…

More film & book ratings

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

As a brief aside – there are a few more movie and book ratings on the reviews page. New entries:

  • Big Fish
  • Touching the Void
  • Shaun of the Dead
  • School of Rock
  • Kill Bill
  • … etc…

Back from hols

Monday, April 26th, 2004

Have just had a very pleasant break in the New Forest which is a very lovely part of England. I’m tempted to create a list of “top five places to ship fat Americans who want the whole Great Britain experience”. So far: New Forest, London, Edinburgh and the Lake District.

Anyway, lots and lots of photos of ponies and trees have been taken. Hopefully some of them will look okay when they’re cropped, manipulated, folded, mutated, spindled and generally sorted out. And when they’re ready you will be the first to know!

View from Arthur’s Seat

This is the view looking north (I think!) from Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano in the heart of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park. Possibly the best public park to capture a sense of wildness while being extremely close to the center of a town. Richmond Park is the only other that comes close, but that doesn’t have a bloody great big hill in the middle, of course…

(Taken last year in September, with my Nokia camera-phone – there’ll be a few more of these now as I can now transfer the images back to my PC.)

Virgin Update, Revolutions and Ratings

Monday, November 24th, 2003

Just to mention that I’ve not had any update from Virgin. The situation definately appears to be related to the line; don’t know if they have any bandwidth limits that I’ve exceeded or what. Their “we will try to get back to you within 24 hours but we’re very busy” line isn’t helpful…

Also, saw Matrix Revolutions which was a disappointment. An enjoyable mindless mess of a movie but what is really annoying is the feeling of a missed opportunity. Lots of questions still remain unanswered, which can sometimes be satsifying – but not if the creators appear to be changing the rules as they go along…

I’ve added it’s (rather poor) rating to my ratings & reviews page, along with a few other films and books that I’ve read recently. As an alternative, I recommend Sexy Beast if only for the performance by Ben Kingsley…

Bloody Virgin

Thursday, November 20th, 2003

I have Virgin ADSL at my new home. It used to be pretty rubbish, for some reason – attempts to connect to websites would hang, getting 4kb/s was pretty good going, etc.

They “upgraded” the back-end infrastructure to cope with the additional demand. Since then, I’ve had few problems with the downloading – getting quite good rates, for the most part.

However, uploading documents to anywhere (any FTP site, my web site, sending emails) is basically broken – it no longer works at all. I have no idea why.

Giving Virgin one final chance, I decided to submit a request to their customer services via the form on their webpage. After you’ve filled in the details, it returns this message:

There was an error sending your details. Please try again later.

Aargh!

Welcome…

This is Maynard Case’s photo weblog – hi! Come in, but remember to wipe your feet.

I was recently given a L’Espion digital camera. This is a tiny camera which takes – well, frankly, pretty rubbish pictures. But it’s so small you can take it anywhere, and with 20 photos on its memory you’re almost guaranteed to get at least one decent and/or interesting shot.

So I’m going to be sticking up a random photo every few days for your interest and delight. Hope you like them…
